Manhattan, KS Water Heater Maintenance by M & S Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc.

It would be a great thing if we lived in a world where all you had to do was install a water heater, then never have to think about it again. Unfortunately, that isn’t the world we live in. Water heaters need maintenance just as much, if not more so, than other systems. Without that maintenance, they will experience a steady decline in effectiveness, followed by eventual breakdown. If you want your water heater to continue serving you well for many years to come, you’re going to need to schedule water heater maintenance at least once a year. Call M & S Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. today, and schedule an appointment with one of our water heater technicians.

M & S Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. offers water heater maintenance services in Manhattan, KS and the surrounding areas.

Why Water Heater Maintenance is Necessary

Your water heater is in constant contact with water from the time it is installed onward. Water is actually quite hard on many materials, especially metals like the ones that comprise most of your water heater’s construction. In order to prevent rampant rust and other issues, steps need to be taken to ensure that the water heater doesn’t fail prematurely. If you install a water heater and never have maintenance done on it, you will find that it does not last nearly as long as it otherwise would. Read on for some of the more specific procedures that take place during a water heater maintenance appointment.

What Happens During a Water Heater Maintenance Appointment

Water heater maintenance comprises a lot of different procedures, depending on what kind of water heater you have, how old it is, etc. There are a few very common procedures that you can always count on to be done, however. Some of these include:

  • Flushing Sediment: If you have a tank water heater, as most people do, sediment can collect on the bottom of the tank over time. This sediment comes from the water flowing in and out of the tank, and is made worse by things like hard water. If this is continues unabated, the buildup can actually insulate the bottom of the tank. This prevents heat from actually penetrating the tank to warm up the water. During a water heater maintenance appointment, the tank is flushed out completely to remove any sediment buildup.
  • Checking the Anode Rod: The anode rod is a metal rod that is inserted into the water heater tank in order to protect it from rust. As the rod degrades over time, it slowly loses the ability to protect the tank from rust. Eventually, the rod cannot protect the tank at all, and needs to be replaced. Water heater maintenance always includes checking the anode rod, to see if it needs replacing.
